Residents typically get a private, lockable unit along with shared kitchen, bathroom, and community spaces, striking a balance between privacy and the social support a shared site can offer. Advocates say the model works best paired with on-site case management, since housing alone doesn't resolve the underlying causes that led residents there in the first place.
